Which states’ factories ship the most toys, dolls and games, counted in dollars? Tap them most-to-least.

Tapping assigns 1→4 in order

California! Hollywood, theme parks, everything fun is there… so it must make the most toys too! 🧸🐾

Answer

The real order is…
Ohio ships about 1.82× as much as #2 California — even though California has more than four times as many toy-making locations (counting businesses with paid workers)! Fewer places, but on average each one ships far more.
📚 Background Counting businesses with paid workers, California has more than four times as many toy-making locations as Ohio — yet Ohio’s toy factories shipped the most toys, dolls and games of any state, more than a quarter of the U.S. total. So, on average, each Ohio toy-making location must ship far more. Which companies are they? The Census will not say: by federal law (Title 13 of the U.S. Code), it publishes no number that would reveal one business’s operations. 🤔 Our own guess: a few very large factories can outweigh many small workshops. Toys, dolls & games shipped by factories in each state, 2022 (million dollars)

🇺🇸 United States (national)1,747 million dollars
    Ohio #1 489.5 million dollars
Most: Ohio (489.5 million dollars). Least among the states shown: New Hampshire (0.9 million dollars).

Note: this is the dollar value of the toys, dolls and games that toy-making factories shipped in 2022, counted in the state where the factory is (not where the toys are sold). It measures money, not the number of toys — one big, expensive toy and many cheap ones can add up the same. U.S. Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census. Only states where the Census published a value are shown. Some states’ values are withheld (“D”) so that no single company’s numbers can be figured out, and the Census prints no row at all when fewer than three companies or locations would be in it. The withheld amounts are still inside the U.S. total, so subtracting the shown states from it estimates all the hidden ones together — and that leftover is smaller than each of the top four, so the top four are the true national top four.

U.S. Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census: Summary Statistics for the U.S., States, and Selected Geographies — Doll, Toy, and Game Manufacturing (NAICS 339930) (opens in a new tab) (2026-10-13) — Official published values of “sales, value of shipments, or revenue” (in $1,000; shown here in millions of dollars). States marked “D” (withheld to avoid disclosing data for individual companies) are left out, and states with no row in the table are not shown; the withheld amounts are still inside the U.S. total. Subtracting the published states from the U.S. total gives an estimate of everything hidden (the Census notes that figures derived by subtraction are not official Census figures); that leftover is smaller than the 4th-place state’s value, so the top four are the national top four.
