Which state harvests the most acres of squash?
🔎 Skip to the answer (ranking table)Guess
Squash comes in many shapes — long green zucchini, yellow crooknecks, bell-shaped butternuts. This quiz counts the acres of farmland where squash was harvested in 2022 (pumpkins are counted on their own line, so they are not in it). USDA’s Census of Agriculture printed a figure for all 50 states. Put these three in order, most-to-least.

Michigan! Squash makes me think of fall, and Michigan has real, chilly falls. Easy 🐾
Answer
The order USDA printed is…
Florida — 10,212 acres of squash harvested in 2022, about one acre in every six of the 63,684 USDA counted for the whole country, and about 1.37× second-place Michigan. That is the largest figure USDA printed. These are census figures with sampling error, so read close places as close. Biscuit’s fall guess, Michigan, came second. And in Florida, squash is not planted in just one season: the University of Florida’s vegetable handbook gives squash planting dates in late winter and spring, and again at the end of summer — in South Florida, from August all the way to March. The handbook does not say that is why Florida’s figure is the largest, and this quiz does not either.
📚 Background When does Florida plant squash? The University of Florida’s Vegetable Production Handbook gives planting dates for squash by region: North Florida “Feb–Apr; Aug–Sept,” Central Florida “Jan–Apr; Aug–Sept,” and South Florida “Aug–Mar.” So in South Florida, squash can be planted from late summer right through the winter. The same table gives pumpkin a much shorter window: “Early July” in North Florida and “Early August” in South Florida. The handbook does not say why Florida’s squash-acre figure is the largest USDA printed. Neither does this quiz. Note: acres of farmland where squash was harvested in 2022, from USDA’s five-yearly Census of Agriculture. All classes of squash are added together in one line; pumpkins have their own line and are not included. This counts land only — not the number of squash and not money.
