The grain hiding in your bird feeder
Scoop up some wild-bird seed and look closely. Those tiny round grains are a serious crop โ and an ancient human food.
Most of the little round white or golden seeds in a wild-bird seed mix are proso millet. It's small, cheap and birds love it, so it fills a lot of the bag.
Basis: Birdseed composition: proso (white) millet is a primary ingredient of commercial wild-bird mixes โ well documented.
But millet isn't just bird food. It's one of the oldest grains people grow โ eaten for thousands of years across Asia and Africa as porridge, flatbread and more, long before it ever filled a feeder.
Basis: Archaeology and food history: millets are among the earliest domesticated cereals โ well established.
Proso millet is a sprinter: it can race from seed to harvest in only a couple of months and needs very little water โ so it grows on hot, dry ground where thirstier crops like corn would wither.
Basis: Agronomy: proso millet is a short-season, drought-escaping crop โ well documented.
Why does the high, dry country of Colorado lead it? A tidy explanation is that a fast, drought-proof grain is perfect as a backup where the season is short and the rain is scarce. That fits โ though where a crop clusters also depends on markets and long habit.
โป A hypothesis is an idea that isn't proven yet.
