🌳 The tree that lost its forest

It was one of the great trees of the eastern woods. In about fifty years it stopped being a tree at all — without ever quite disappearing.

Next time you are in an eastern wood, look low instead of high. A cluster of thin stems with long, saw-toothed leaves rising straight out of the ground may be a chestnut root that has been trying, and failing, for a hundred years. Then ask the bigger question: what else near you is still alive, but no longer allowed to grow up?
