California has the most public-school students in America. So it must have the most teachers tooโฆ right? Wrong โ and the reason is worth thinking about.
California has the most public-school students of any state โ about 5.9 million kids in fall 2022.
Basis: This site's NCES data (Digest Table 203.20).
But Texas employs the most teachers โ even with about 400,000 fewer students than California. Divide it out and Texas has fewer kids per teacher.
Basis: This site's NCES data (Tables 203.20 and 208.30); the per-teacher comparison is machine-checked from the same two tables.
Texas also runs almost twice as many schools as New York. States genuinely organize school differently โ some run many smaller schools, others fewer, bigger ones.
Basis: This site's NCES data (Table 216.70): school counts by state.
Why does Texas hire more teachers per student? Rules about class sizes, more small-town schools that each need their own staff, and state budget choices could all play a part โ the exact mix isn't something one table can prove.
โป A hypothesis is an idea that isn't proven yet.
