Alaska finishes near the top of the sleep-away camp table even though hardly anyone lives there. Part of that is what the government decided to count. And while you are up there, something else is worth knowing: in an Alaskan summer, the sky refuses to go dark.
Earth spins on a tilted axis — leaning about 23.4 degrees away from straight up. That lean, not how close we are to the Sun, is what makes seasons. In June the northern half of the planet leans toward the Sun, so the farther north you stand, the longer the Sun stays in your sky.

Push far enough north and the Sun stops setting altogether. The Arctic Circle, at about 66.5° north, marks the line beyond which that happens for at least one full day a year. Alaska is the only one of the fifty states that reaches past it. At Utqiaġvik, a town on Alaska’s Arctic coast, the official U.S. sun tables show the Sun continuously above the horizon from mid-May right through the end of July — about two and a half months without a sunset.

The Arctic Circle is defined as roughly 66.5° N, the southern limit of the midnight sun — and no other state is anywhere near it: the northernmost point of the contiguous 48 states lies close to 49° N, on the border with Canada.
You do not have to go that far north to lose the night. Fairbanks sits well south of the Arctic Circle, yet on the June solstice the Sun is up for close to 22 hours — and in the couple of hours it is down, the sky never gets properly dark, because the Sun stays just under the horizon. Even Anchorage, farther south again, gets more than 19 hours of Sun that day.

The same tilt sends the bill in winter. At Utqiaġvik the Sun goes the other way: it stays continuously below the horizon for about two months, from late November until late January. A place with an endless summer day also has an endless winter night.

Does that huge summer light explain why Alaska sits so high in the camp count? It is tempting — a short, bright season, visitors arriving to fish and hike, and a table that files hunting and fishing camps in the very same line as children’s summer camps. But a count of business locations cannot separate the daylight from the fish from the tourists, so treat it as an idea, not proof.
