Somewhere in the government’s filing cabinets is a table where one state’s row and the entire country’s row carry the same numbers. It is not a misprint.
USDA publishes a report called simply Coffee. It gives bearing acreage, yield, production, price and value — and prints each of them twice: once on a line labelled Hawaii, once on a line labelled United States, with the same figure on both. The report even defines its terms carefully, so you know exactly what is being doubled: bearing acreage means an orchard or grove “is considered to be of bearing age when it can normally be expected to produce a commercially significant quantity of the crop.” The repetition is not a formatting quirk. In that survey there is simply nothing else to add.

Zoom out and the scale is almost comic. USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service counts the world’s coffee in 60-kilogram bags: in its July 2026 circular, world production for 2026/27 was “forecast 10.8 million bags higher than the previous year to a record 189.7 million,” and “Brazil accounts for nearly 40 percent of world production.” The same circular keeps a page listing every coffee-producing country and the months its marketing year runs. The United States is on it, on an October–September year, sitting in the alphabet between Uganda and Venezuela. A producing country whose national coffee report has room for exactly one state.

Keeping a national crop in one place is a risk with a name. In 2020 the disease every coffee country fears reached the islands. USDA’s Agricultural Research Service describes coffee leaf rust as “an aggressive, economically devastating pathogen of coffee plants worldwide” and reports that it “was discovered in Hawaii in 2020 and quickly spread throughout the state.” ARS scientists in Hilo then went hunting for something to fight it with, surveying the fungi that live on rust lesions, and reported “the first ever potential coffee leaf rust hyperparasite discovered in Hawaii” — a fungus that attacks the fungus.

Two ways of counting the same crop give two different pictures, and both are correct. The yearly report is built from samples: “standardized probability grower surveys are conducted semiannually,” USDA explains, and “survey indications are subject to sampling variability because all operations growing coffee are not included in the sample.” The Census of Agriculture is the other kind of counting — taken once every five years, farm by farm. And in 2022 the census found coffee acres in two more states that the yearly survey never prints: a small block in California, and in Florida a grand total of one bearing acre. Neither would ever move a national forecast. But “how much coffee will America have?” and “where in America is coffee growing at all?” are different questions, and they need different tools.

Why there and nowhere else on the mainland? The honest answer is that no source quoted on this page explains the map. Coffee is grown across the tropics and the fifty states sit mostly a long way north of them, which makes climate the obvious suspect — but “obvious” is not the same as “shown,” and a page about official statistics should be clear about which one it is doing. What the numbers themselves demonstrate is stranger and firmer: a single state can be very nearly the whole of a national industry.
