🍄 The crop that grows in the dark

Every other crop on this site chases sunlight. Mushrooms want none of it — and that one difference redraws the whole map.

✅ What we know (fact)

A mushroom isn't a plant — it's a fungus. Plants build their own food out of sunlight (photosynthesis). Fungi can't do that at all; they feed on material that is already there. So a mushroom farm needs no windows.

Basis: Basic biology: fungi are not plants and do not photosynthesise — textbook science.

✅ What we know (fact)

They're grown indoors in mushroom houses — windowless rooms with stacked beds, kept cool and damp. The common white and brown mushrooms feed on beds of compost; woodland kinds like shiitake and oyster are grown on sawdust or logs instead. Either way the grower controls the temperature and moisture, so a room can be cropped again and again whatever the weather is doing outside.

Because sunshine and climate barely matter, the mushroom map isn't drawn by weather the way a field crop's is. Instead it clusters hard: roughly two-thirds of America's mushrooms come from a single state, Pennsylvania, with California and New Jersey next (check the quiz data).

🤔 What people think (hypothesis)

Why Pennsylvania? The story usually told is that in the late 1800s flower growers near a town called Kennett Square tried raising mushrooms in the wasted dark space under their greenhouse benches. Once a few farms worked out how, neighbours copied them, and the compost makers, spawn suppliers and packing houses all grew up in the same few valleys — a cluster that is hard to start somewhere else. It is a tidy story; how much of it is the real reason is harder to pin down.

That town still carries the title: Kennett Square is nicknamed the “Mushroom Capital of the World.”

Basis: The town's long-standing nickname, used by the borough itself — well documented.
